Crime Victim Compensation Lookup Questions

How much does the program pay for cleanup?

For crimes after July 14, 2016, the program pays up to $2,250 for crime scene cleanup costs. For earlier crimes, different limits may apply. If more than one person paid for the cleanup, the money is split fairly. Ask the Attorney General's office about a specific case.

Does insurance come first?

Yes. By law the program is a last resort. If homeowners or renters insurance can pay, it must be used before the program. When applying, the Attorney General asks for the insurance declarations page or a statement of no insurance, so keep either one ready.

What does the program pay for?

Professional cleaning services and cleaning supplies. A person who cleans alone can be reimbursed for supplies. If a company is hired, its service costs may also be reimbursed. The program does not pay for property theft, damage or loss, identity theft costs, or costs that are not a direct result of the crime.

Who can apply?

A person the crime happened to, or a claimant such as someone paying crime-related bills, a dependent, a family member or someone authorized to act for a person who died or cannot apply. Businesses and organizations cannot apply. The application is free, and no lawyer is required, though a person may choose to have one help.

How long does a person have to apply?

The program asks for applications within 3 years of the crime, unless good cause can be shown for the delay. The crime should also be reported to law enforcement within a reasonable time. If the time has passed, call the Attorney General's office and ask whether an exception applies.
